Malcolm told me to keep a low profile, but I didn’t have many options for hiding my face. I took a pair of sunglasses from Abigail that were the most gender neutral, left my hair loose, and covered any noticeable markings like tattoos and scars. I was rougher as a boy, not one to avoid fights. So my hands had lighter scars here and there. Nothing too noticeable, but you covered those things up when you might commit a crime. I used some concealers that Abigail had in her bathroom. Don’t tell her.

I took a paid car to the hospital and promised the guy the biggest tip he’d ever gotten if he stayed a while and returned me home. When I handed him two hundred-dollar bills, he leaned back, cut off the engine, and got comfortable.

Inside, I received instructions to the maternity clinic, and she gave me a pretty map with highlighted parts.

That couldn’t have been the same hospital I’d overheard Malcolm and Abigail talking about because it was clean, nice, and the doctors and nurses looked official and like they knew what they were doing. They hustled as if they had somewhere to be. A real-life version of Grey’s Anatomy. Big and official-looking. Sterile but inviting.

Upstairs, I was careful when entering the pregnancy unit because, unlike Abigail, if Paula saw me, she’d know who I was and why I was there. She wasn’t in the waiting area, and when I checked the front desk, they told me she’d already left. Thinking quickly, I tried to get as much info as I could without making her suspicious.

“Paula’s going to be pissed at me.” I sighed audibly to make sure I had her attention. “I keep missing her appointments because of my asshole-boss not letting me leave on time. She’d been holding out on the details of the pregnancy until I make them a priority. Was hoping to hear the heartbeats.”

“I’m sorry. I can’t let you hear anything…” She hesitated, looking me over. “Has she let you see the ultrasounds?”

“No. It’s okay. I’ll just explain it all to her later. I appreciate your help.” Pulling out my phone, I made a show of looking defeated.

“I’m sure it’ll be okay if I show you the sonogram. It’s just the picture,” she said sweetly.

I should have felt guilty, but I’d never asked her for the information; she was supplying it. Wrong or right, I needed something while I was here, since I’d missed Paula completely.

She pulled Paula’s file from the stack and pulled out the pictures, paper clipped to the inside. She covered Paula’s information at the bottom of the photo but showed me the baby. “This is Baby A. She’s healthy and slightly smaller than Baby B. He looks like he’ll be long. They both are meeting all of their growth goals.”

“Baby A and Baby B, huh?” Stunned, I tried to keep my shocked expression off my face. Domino was expecting one child, not two. Paula hadn’t mentioned a second baby.

“Yes, that’s how we tell them apart.
